9th International Film Festival of Marrakech on December 4 to 12, 2009
From December 4 to 9 is held the 9th edition of International Film Festival of Marrakech, a festival that follows the model of other festivals organized by The Public Theater System with previews, competitions and tributes. It is also more than ever a global hub of filmmaking in an exceptional place.
This year the festival will pay tribute to Sir Ben Kingsley, Emir Kusturica, Said Taghmaoui and Christopher Walken.
The jury will be chaired by Abbas Kiarostami and especially composed by Fanny Ardant, Christophe Honoré, Marisa Paredes, Mike Figgis, Nandita Das, Isabella Ferrari, Elia Suleiman, Pablo Trapero, Lahcen Zinoun.
The 9-th International Film Festival of Marrakech made Sunday night a special tribute to the South Korean cinema, which has enjoyed two decades sustained development.
Of Piagol in 1955 Thirst in 2009 through Kim's Daughters (1977), I-Eoh Island (1982), Late Fall (1985), The Oldest Son (1990), Black Republic (1999), Peppermint Candy (2002), Strokes Of Fire (2003), or King And The Clown in 2005, the films scheduled to receive a wide range of topics relating to the action, revenge, love and many other societal phenomena.
Are present at the festival and eminent figures of the country's cinema in the morning light, the likes of Song Kang-ho, Kim Tae-shik, Jeon Soo-il, Park Chan-Wook, Lee Jang-Ho, Lee Doo- yong, Jang Joon-Hwan Jang Sun-Woo or Im Kwon Taek.
Like the British film in 2008, the star of the festival was awarded to the South Korean delegation, represented by directors Park Chan-wook and Im Kwon Taek, the hands of the jury president Abbas Kiarostami.
Invited to speak, Korean filmmakers have thanked HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Foundation of Marrakech International Film Festival to honor reserved for the South Korean cinema, adding that this event will bring even more cultures and peoples of Morocco and Korean.
They noted that the success of the Korean cinema in recent years, is put above all the assets of directors and actors, young and old, who managed to bring the voices of Korea in the world.
The emergence of Korean cinema in its universal form can also be attributed, in their view, the political will to help the local film productions while imposing restrictions on imports of foreign films.
"The Koreans love their cinema has encouraged directors to move forward in a creative and imaginative," they said.
This tribute evening was capped off with a screening of "Strokes of Fire" (drunk women and painting), the great Korean director Im Kwon-Taek. The film, produced in 2002, tells the story of a famous painter, not only for his art but also for his eccentricity and his libertine lifestyle.
This 9-th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival will also look at a Thai film, which is experiencing efflorescence artistic past fifteen years. A selection of films will be projected time of the festival.
Fifteen films from 15 countries, including eight first œuvres, are vying for the Golden Star / Grand Prix, the jury and those desmeilleures male and female interpretations of this edition, which will expire December 12 current.
