Arabic is the official language. Like the other Arabic speaking countries, the language spoken is Arabic dialect that differs quite significantly from one country to another.
French is often used in business, government, higher education and the media (print, radio, TV), signs are written in Arabic and French. Most people understand the major cities, particularly among youth who are increasingly bilingual and even trilingual (progression of understanding of English).
Finally, a significant fraction of the population practices a Berber dialect. It is indeed often the only language understood in remote areas such as the high valleys of the Atlas.
In tourist areas, particularly in the guides, all languages are spoken: Arabic and French, of course, but also German, English, Spanish or Italian. And we hear more and more often speak Russian or Polish in some areas hotels.
